Hauptman in all his senior career between 1982 and 1998, he played seventeen consecutive seasons all for the "greens" of Smelt Olimpija.[1] He played on the position of shooting guard and had a good three-point shot. As one of the main actors of the game is to help to lead Olimpija to manage at the two of the biggest successes of the club, the conquest of the 1993–94 FIBA European Cup and third place in the 1997 FIBA Euroleague Final Four where the Slovenians, defeated ASVEL (in the semi-final had lost from Olympiacos).[2]
He was a member of the Yugoslav B team and the Slovenian national team, with whom he performed at the EuroBasket 1995 in OAKA, Athens.[3]
