Der Flügelstürmer absolvierte von 1965 bis 1981 in der Fußball-Bundesliga bei den Vereinen 1. FC Nürnberg, Hamburger SV und VfB Stuttgart insgesamt 410 Ligaspiele und erzielte 125 Tore. Mit Nürnberg gewann er 1968 die deutsche Meisterschaft, mit Hamburg 1976 den DFB-Pokal und 1977 den Europapokal der Pokalsieger. In seinen zwei Jahren beim FC Zürich (1969 bis 1971) gewann er 1970 den Schweizer Cup.
