On 24 November 2016, Sohel's free kick goal from 30 yards, earned financially struggling Muktijoddha Sangsad KC a crucial win against his former club Mohammedan SC, during the 2016 Bangladesh Premier League.[2]
On 23 February 2022, Sohel scored the only goal during the Dhaka Derby. He dedicated his long range strike to his late wife and son, both of whom were killed during a street accident, in 2018.[3][4]
He made his debut for the national team against Bhutan on 6 September 2016, during the 2019 AFC Asian Cup qualifiers.[5]
On 24 November 2018, Sohel Rana and his family were at their home in Manikganj after Sheikh Russel KC got eliminated from the finished 2018 Federation Cup and the trio were returning to Dhaka as Sohel Rana had to join his team for the upcoming 2016 Independence Cup. The accident took place when the speeding truck crashed their motorcycle killing Rana’s wife Arfin Akter Jhuma, and four year old son Abdullah on the spot while Rana himself sustained serious injuries.[6]
