In the 2012–13 season, Meier played in his native Switzerland at the Elite Jr. A level with the Rapperswil-Jona Lakers. Meier was selected 12th overall by the Halifax Mooseheads in the 2013 CHL Import Draft,[2] and started playing with the Mooseheads in the 2013–14 season. He was named captain of the Mooseheads for the 2015–16 season a few weeks before the start of the season.
On 6 January 2016, Meier was traded to the Rouyn-Noranda Huskies in exchange for a first round pick in 2017, second round pick in 2017 and a fourth round pick in 2018.[3]
Meier was selected ninth overall by the San Jose Sharks in the 2015 NHL Entry Draft.[4] On 8 July 2015, the Sharks signed Meier to a three-year entry level contract.[5]
Meier made his NHL debut on 16 December 2016, at the Bell Centre against the Montreal Canadiens and scored his first goal that same day.[6] Following the Sharks defeat in the 2018 Stanley Cup playoffs, Meier joined Team Switzerland at the 2018 IIHF World Championship.[7]
He was re-signed by the Sharks to a four-year, $24 million contract on 1 July 2019.[8] He scored his first hat-trick on 28 December 2019, in a 6–1 win over the Philadelphia Flyers.[9]
On January 13, 2022, he was selected to the 2022 All-Star Game.[10] Four days later, he became the first player in Sharks franchise history to score five goals in one game, in a 6–2 win over the Los Angeles Kings.[11]
