Carrière

Il remporte au cours de sa carrière le titre de champion du monde dans 3 catégories différentes : poids plumes WBA (de 1974 à 1976), poids super-plumes WBC (de 1978 à 1980) et poids légers WBC (de 1981 à 1983)[1]. Il est considéré comme le 20^e plus grand puncheur de tous les temps selon le classement de Ring Magazine établi en 2003.

Reconversion

Après sa retraite sportive, il se lance dans la politique et est élu maire de Managua sur une liste du Front sandiniste de libération nationale (FSLN) en 2008. Le 1^er juillet 2009, il est retrouvé mort d'une balle dans la poitrine[2].

Distinction

• Alexis Argüello est membre de l'International Boxing Hall of Fame depuis 1992.

Andrés Alexis Argüello Bohórquez (* 19. April 1952 in Managua, Nicaragua; † 1. Juli 2009[1] ebenda) war ein nicaraguanischer Profiboxer. Er wurde im November 1974 Weltmeister der WBA im Federgewicht und konnte den Titel viermal verteidigen, ehe er 1977 in das Superfedergewicht aufstieg und dort im Januar 1978 den WBC-Weltmeistertitel erkämpfte und achtmal verteidigte. 1980 stieg er in das Leichtgewicht auf und wurde dort im Juni 1981 auch hier Weltmeister der WBC und gewann vier Titelverteidigungen.

Alexis Argüello (April 19, 1952 – July 1, 2009) was a Nicaraguan professional boxer who competed from 1968 to 1995, and later became a politician. He was a three-weight world champion, having held the WBA featherweight title from 1974 to 1976; the WBC super featherweight title from 1978 to 1980; and the WBC lightweight title from 1981 to 1982. Additionally, he held the Ring magazine and lineal featherweight titles from 1975 to 1977; the Ring lightweight title from 1981 to 1982; and the lineal lightweight title in 1982. In his later career he challenged twice for light welterweight world titles, both times in famous fights against Aaron Pryor.

Чемпион мира в полулёгкой (версия WBA, 1974—1976), 2-й полулёгкой (версия WBC, 1978—1980) и лёгкой (версия WBC, 1981—1982) весовых категориях. Был признан лучшим боксёром XX века во 2-м полулёгком весе по версии журналистов Ассошиэйтед Пресс[2].
