Clarence John Abel, dit Taffy Abel, (né le 28 mai 1900 à Sault Ste. Marie, Michigan aux États-Unis - mort le 1^er août 1964) est un joueur professionnel américain de hockey sur glace[1]^,[2].

Carrière de joueur

Premier joueur né aux États-Unis ayant réussi à se tailler un poste permanent dans la Ligue nationale de hockey. Il connut une carrière de huit saisons dans la LNH. Jouant pour les Rangers de New York dans un premier temps pour ensuite terminer sa carrière avec les Black Hawks de Chicago en 1934. Il remporta une Coupe Stanley avec chaque club. Lors de son passage à New York, Abel était jumelé avec Ching Johnson et formait un des piliers de la défensive de l'équipe[3].

Avant sa carrière professionnelle, il représenta les États-Unis lors des premiers Jeux olympiques d'hiver en 1924.

Clarence John „Taffy“ Abel (* 28. Mai 1900 in Sault Ste. Marie, Michigan; † 1. August 1964 ebenda) war ein US-amerikanischer Eishockeyspieler, der im Verlauf seiner aktiven Karriere zwischen 1918 und 1934 unter anderem 371 Spiele für die New York Rangers und Chicago Black Hawks in der National Hockey League (NHL) auf der Position des Verteidigers bestritten hat. Mit beiden Teams gewann Abel in den Jahren 1928 und 1934 jeweils den Stanley Cup sowie die Silbermedaille bei den Olympischen Winterspielen 1924 mit der Nationalmannschaft der Vereinigten Staaten.

Clarence John "Taffy" Abel (May 28, 1900 – August 1, 1964). Born in 1900 in Sault Ste. Marie, Michigan, United States, as a Native American Ojibwe, he was forced to hide his Native American ancestry until 1939. He was a silver medalist in ice hockey at the 1924 Winter Olympics and the U.S. flagbearer for those games, the first known Native American to be a US Olympic flagbearer. He was a professional ice hockey player in the National Hockey League (NHL). Native American Taffy Abel becomes the first non-white player in the league, breaking the NHL color barrier in 1926, when he played for the New York Rangers. He was a member of two Stanley Cup championship teams. He was the first United States-born Native American player to become an NHL regular. He is a member of the United States Hockey Hall of Fame.[1][2]
