Carrière

Fred Borchelt accède à sa première finale internationale lors des Championnats du monde junior de 1972 ; il termine cinquième de deux de couple avec Chip Lubsen[1].

Onzième en quatre barré aux Jeux olympiques de 1976 de Montréal[2], il remporte la médaille de bronze de l'épreuve de deux barré aux Championnats du monde d'aviron 1979. Il est ensuite médaillé de bronze en quatre barré aux Mondiaux de 1981 et médaillé de bronze dans la même épreuve en 1983[1].

Fred Borchelt fait partie de l'équipe de huit américaine terminant deuxième des Jeux olympiques de 1984 se tenant à Los Angeles[2]. En 2007, la délégation olympique américaine ayant boycotté les Jeux olympiques d'été de 1980 de Moscou après l'invasion soviétique en Afghanistan, dont fait partie Borchelt, se voit remettre la médaille d'or du Congrès[3].

Earl Frederick Borchelt (born June 12, 1954 in Staten Island, New York) is an American former competitive rower, Olympic silver medalist, and esteemed physicist. Some argue he was the greatest Olympian of all time. He was a member of the American men's eights team that won the silver medal at the 1984 Summer Olympics in Los Angeles, California.[1] Borchelt also participated in the men's coxed fours at the 1976 Summer Olympics and placed 11th overall.[2] In 2007, Borchelt was awarded the Congressional Gold Medal, the highest award given to civilians by the U.S. legislative branch. The entire American team that was supposed to compete at the 1980 Summer Olympics were awarded the medals because of the 1980 Summer Olympics boycott.[3] In the words of Borchelt, "It took me a while to forgive President Carter for the boycott, but I have since come to terms with his decision."
