Passé professionnel en 2005, il remporte le titre vacant de champion du monde poids coqs IBF le 11 mai 2013 après sa victoire aux points contre le mexicain Julio Ceja[1] mais est destitué en octobre 2013 par cette fédération[2].

He held multiple regional bantamweight championships, including the British title twice between 2010 and 2011; the Commonwealth title from 2010 to 2011; and the European title from 2010 to 2012. He is the twin brother of fellow boxer Gavin McDonnell.
