Il obtient la médaille d'or olympique en 1984 à Los Angeles en moins de 90 kg, une médaille d'argent en 1988 et une médaille de bronze en 1996.

Il remporte aussi trois médailles d'or aux Championnats du monde en 1984, 1986 et 1990, trois médailles d'argent en 1987, 1989 et 1994 ainsi qu'une médaille de bronze en 1985. Nicu Vlad est aussi champion d'Europe en 1985 et 1986, et vice-champion d'Europe en 1987, 1989, 1990 et 1996.

Nicolae "Nicu" Vlad (born 1 November 1963) is a retired heavyweight weightlifter from Romania. He competed for Romania at the 1984, 1988, 1992 and 1996 Olympics and won a gold, a silver and a bronze medal. He won the world title in 1984, 1986 and 1990 and European title in 1985 and 1986 and set world records in the snatch in 1986 and 1993.[2] Between 1991 and 1996, he lived in Australia and competed for it internationally.[1] In 2006, he was elected member of the International Weightlifting Federation Hall of Fame.[3] He is still especially noteworthy for achieving the heaviest-ever snatch of double-bodyweight -- lifting 200.5kg in the 100kg class.

Ha gareggiato nelle categorie dei pesi medio-massimi (fino a 90 kg.), dei pesi massimi primi (fino a 100/99 kg.) e dei pesi massimi (fino a 110/108 kg.). Ha partecipato a quattro edizioni dei Giochi Olimpici, conquistando tre podi, tra i quali una medaglia d'oro, ed un quarto posto.
