Carrière

Il devient champion du monde des poids plumes WBC en battant par arrêt de l'arbitre à la 13^e reprise Danny Lopez le 2 février 1980[1]. Sánchez conserve sa ceinture 9 fois en deux ans et demi de règne. Il compte notamment des victoires sur Juan La Porte le 13 décembre 1980[2], Wilfredo Gómez le 21 août 1981[3] et Azumah Nelson le 21 juillet 1982[4], soit quelques jours seulement avant son accident.

Distinctions

• Salvador Sánchez est élu boxeur de l'année en 1981 par Ring Magazine.
• Il est membre de l'International Boxing Hall of Fame depuis 1991.

Salvador Sánchez Santiago (* 26. Januar 1959 in Tianguistenco, Mexiko; † 12. August 1982 bei Querétaro, Mexiko) war ein mexikanischer Profiboxer. Sánchez galt trotz seines frühen Todes im Alter von 23 Jahren als einer der besten mexikanischen Boxer aller Zeiten. Von Februar 1980 bis zu seinem Tod war er WBC-Weltmeister im Federgewicht und gewann in diesem Zeitraum neun Titelverteidigungen. 1991 fand er Aufnahme in die International Boxing Hall of Fame.

Salvador "Sal" Sánchez Narváez (January 26, 1959 – August 12, 1982) was a Mexican professional boxer born in the town of Santiago Tianguistenco, Estado de México. Sanchez was the WBC and The Ring featherweight champion from 1980 to 1982. Many of his contemporaries as well as boxing writers believe that had it not been for his premature death, Sánchez could have gone on to become the greatest featherweight boxer of all time. Sánchez died on August 12, 1982 in a car accident from Querétaro to San Luis Potosí.[2] He is also the uncle of Salvador Sánchez II.[3]
