Carrière

Médaillé d'argent aux Jeux olympiques de Los Angeles en 1984 dans la catégorie poids moyens et vainqueur des Golden Gloves[1], il passe professionnel la même année et devient champion du monde des mi-lourds WBA le 5 septembre 1987 en battant par arrêt de l'arbitre au 4^e round Leslie Stewart.

Hill conserve 10 fois sa ceinture avant de perdre aux points face à Thomas Hearns le 3 juin 1991. Il remporte à nouveau cette ceinture le 29 septembre 1992 aux dépens de Frank Tate puis unifie les titres WBA & IBF en battant l'Allemand Henry Maske le 23 novembre 1996. Il échoue en revanche dans sa tentative de récupérer la ceinture WBO en s'inclinant aux points contre Dariusz Michalczewski[2].

Après une nouvelle défaite contre Roy Jones Jr. l'année suivante[3], cette fois par KO, il décide de boxer en lourds-légers et s'empare du titre WBA le 9 décembre 2000 contre le français Fabrice Tiozzo avant que son compatriote Jean-Marc Mormeck ne le venge le 23 février 2002.

Distinction

• Virgil Hill est membre de l'International Boxing Hall of Fame depuis 2013[4].

Virgil Eugene Hill (* 18. Januar 1964 in Clinton, Missouri, Vereinigte Staaten) ist ein ehemaliger US-amerikanischer Profiboxer. Von September 1987 bis Juni 1991 und erneut von September 1992 bis Juni 1997 war er Weltmeister der WBA im Halbschwergewicht, zudem trug er von November 1996 bis Juni 1997 zusätzlich den Weltmeistertitel der IBF. Darüber hinaus war Hill von Dezember 2000 bis Februar 2002 und erneut von Januar 2006 bis November 2007 auch WBA-Weltmeister im Cruisergewicht. 2013 fand er Aufnahme in die International Boxing Hall of Fame.[1]

He is a two-weight world champion, having held the WBA light heavyweight title twice, from 1987 to 1997; the IBF and lineal light heavyweight titles from 1996 to 1997; and the WBA cruiserweight title twice, from 2000 to 2002 and 2006 to 2007. As an amateur, Hill won a silver medal in the middleweight division at the 1984 Summer Olympics. In 2013, he was inducted into the International Boxing Hall of Fame.
