Dopo le esperienze nelle squadre giovanili in SJHL e WHL, giocò per diciotto stagioni in National Hockey League con Boston Bruins (da cui era stato scelto al draft 1979, 1979-1982), Philadelphia Flyers (1982-1987), Calgary Flames (1987-1990), Detroit Red Wings (1990-1993), Hartford Whalers (1993-1996) e Phoenix Coyotes (1996-1997).[1]

Con 1222 presenze è all'83º posto tra i giocatori con più presenze in NHL.[2]

Dopo il ritiro iniziò la sua carriera da allenatore. Fu assistente allenatore di diverse squadre NHL[3]: New York Islanders (1997-1999), Calgary Flames (2000-2003), Atlanta Thrashers (2003-2008) e Detroit Red Wings (2008-2011)[4]. Per un biennio (1998-2000) era anche stato primo allenatore dei Saskatoon Blades, in WHL.[4]

Il 29 maggio 2011 era stato scelto come primo allenatore dalla Lokomotiv Jaroslavl', squadra della Kontinental Hockey League[4]. Non riuscì tuttavia mai ad esordire sulla panchina russa: l'aereo che avrebbe dovuto trasportare la squadra a Mosca per la prima giornata di campionato precipitò in fase di decollo, uccidendo l'intera squadra e otto membri dell'equipaggio.[5]

He played over 1,200 games in the National Hockey League (NHL) for the Boston Bruins, Philadelphia Flyers, Calgary Flames, Detroit Red Wings, Hartford Whalers and Phoenix Coyotes between 1979 and 1997. He achieved his greatest success in Calgary, where he was named a second team All-Star in 1987–88, played in the 1988 NHL All-Star Game and won the Plus-Minus Award with a league leading total of +48. In 1989, he helped the Flames win their only Stanley Cup championship. His career plus-minus of +444 is the 10th highest total in NHL history, and the highest among players not inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame.
