Soprannominato "The Sniper"[1][2] ("il cecchino"), in carriera disputò 46 incontri da professionista, vincendone 42 (di cui 31 per K.O.) e perdendone 4 (tutti per K.O.)[1][2][3], diventando anche campione mondiale WBU e WBO[1][3][4][5][6][7][8].

Era allenato da Harold Volbrecht.[1]

Biografia

Cornelius Johannes Sanders era nato a Pretoria (Sudafrica), il 7 gennaio 1966.[1][2][3][6]

Carriera

Inizia la propria carriera agonistica alla fine degli anni ottanta.[1]

Disputa il suo primo incontro da professionista il 2 aprile 1989[2][3], affrontando e battendo a Città del Capo King Kong Dyubele[3][6], che finisce al tappeto al primo round[6].

Il 27 luglio 1991 vince il titolo sudafricano dei pesi massimi, battendo a Sun City Johnny Du Plooy.[6]

La sua prima sconfitta (per k.o. al secondo round[1]) è con Nate Tubbs[1] e giunge dopo 23 vittorie consecutive[1].

L'8 marzo 2003, diventa campione mondiale dei pesi massimi WBO, battendo a Hannover, in Germania, il campione in carica, l'ucraino Volodymyr Klyčko[1][4][5][6][7][8], che viene mandato k.o. dopo 37 secondi dall'inizio del secondo round[4]. In seguito, rinuncia a difendere il titolo.[6]

Il 2 febbraio 2008 disputa il suo ultimo incontro, affrontando Osbourne Machimana[3][6] e chiudendo la propria carriera con una sconfitta per k.o.[6]

La tragica morte

Intorno alle sei di sera[8] di sabato 22 settembre 2012, mentre si trova in un ristorante di Blitz, nei pressi di Pretoria, per festeggiare il 21º compleanno di una nipote, viene ferito allo stomaco e ad una mano da colpi d'arma da fuoco sparati all'impazzata da tre rapinatori[5][6][8][9] (secondo alcune testimonianze, nel tentativo di proteggere un figlio[10]). Trasportato al Kafalong Hospital di Pretoria[9], muore alle 4 del mattino[9] di domenica 23 settembre 2012[1].

Cinque giorni dopo, venerdì 28 settembre 2012, vengono arrestati i presunti responsabili dell'omicidio di Sanders, un ventisettene, un venticinquenne e un diciannovenne originari dello Zimbabwe.[10][11][12]

I funerali di Corrie Sanders vengono celebrati lunedì 1º ottobre 2012 nella Ned Geref Kerk a Wonderpark, Pretoria, alla presenza di centinaia di persone.[11][13]

He won the WBO heavyweight title in 2003 after knocking out Wladimir Klitschko in two rounds, which was considered one of the biggest upsets in heavyweight boxing history; The Ring magazine named it the Upset of the Year. In 2004, having vacated the WBO title, Sanders faced Wladimir's brother Vitali Klitschko in an unsuccessful but valiant challenge for the vacant WBC and Ring heavyweight titles. He also held the WBU heavyweight title from 1997 until 2000. Sanders' other notable achievements include holding the South Africa national heavyweight title in 1991, defeating former cruiserweight champions Carlos de León and Bobby Czyz by first round and second-round knockout respectively, and losing in a close slugfest fight with future unified and two-time world heavyweight champion Hasim Rahman (Rahman and Sanders both knocked each other down during the bout, and Sanders was ahead on the judges' scorecards prior to the stoppage).
