Biografia



Carriera sportiva


Ha vinto una medaglia d'oro olimpica nell'hockey su prato femminile ai Giochi olimpici di Atlanta 1996. In quell'occasione è stata la prima aborigena australiana a vincere una medaglia d'oro olimpica.

Inoltre con la sua nazionale ha vinto altri trofei tra cui un campionato mondiale (1994) e due Champions Trophy (1993 e 1995).


Carriera politica


Per quanto riguarda la sua carriera politica, dal settembre 2013 è membro del Senato australiano in rappresentanza del Territorio del Nord. È esponente del Partito Laburista Australiano.

Nova Peris (Nova Maree Peris, zeitweilig Peris-Kneebone; * 25. Februar 1971 in Darwin, Northern Territory) ist eine ehemalige australische Hockeyspielerin und Sprinterin. Als Politikerin wurde sie bei der Parlamentswahl 2013 die erste Ureinwohnerin, die in das australische Parlament gewählt wurde.[1][2]

Nova Maree Peris OAM (born 25 February 1971) is an Aboriginal Australian athlete and former politician. As part of the Australian women's field hockey (Hockeyroos) team at the 1996 Olympic Games, she was the first Aboriginal Australian to win an Olympic gold medal. She later switched sports to sprinting and went to the 1998 Commonwealth Games and 2000 Olympic Games. She was elected to the Australian Senate at the 2013 federal election, after then Prime Minister Julia Gillard named her as a "captain's pick", installing her as the preselected Labor candidate over incumbent Labor senator Trish Crossin. She retired from the Senate in 2016.
