Carriera professionistica

Merrimen fu scelto nel Draft NFL del 2005 dai San Diego Chargers come 12ª scelta assoluta[1]. Nella sua prima stagione da professionista vinse il premio di miglior rookie difensivo dell'anno.

Il 2 novembre 2010, i Chargers svincolarono Merriman. I Buffalo Bills ne acquisirono le prestazioni il 3 novembre 2010 ma lo svincolarono dopo una sola stagione il 20 agosto 2012[2].

Il 15 ottobre il giocatore tornò a giocare con Buffalo e nel Thursday Night della settimana 11 mise a segno il suo primo sack stagionale su Ryan Tannehill dei Miami Dolphins[3].

Il 15 marzo 2013, Merriman annunciò il suo ritiro.

Shawne DeAndre Merriman[1] (born May 25, 1984), nicknamed "Lights Out", is an American former professional football player who was a linebacker in the National Football League (NFL). He played college football for the Maryland Terrapins and was selected 12th overall by the San Diego Chargers in the 2005 NFL Draft. He was picked up through waivers by the Buffalo Bills that season, but he only played minimally with the Bills due to continued injuries. He was released by the Bills before the 2012 season before they re-signed him mid-season. He retired at the end of the 2012 season.
