The name was chosen in homage to Rafael Mendoza Castillo (1924-2002), historical president of the club. The stadium was inaugurated on 16 July 1986 with a match between The Strongest and Club Bolivar.[1][2][3]

El Estadio Rafael Mendoza Castellón es un recinto deportivo de propiedad privada del Club The Strongest de Bolivia, ubicado en la zona de Achumani en el Macrodistrito Sur de la ciudad de La Paz a una altura de 3502 msnm. Fue inaugurado el 16 de julio de 1986 en homenaje a la fundación de la ciudad de La Paz.
