El estadio de Várzea es un campo de fútbol situado en la Avenida Cidade de Lisboa, del barrio de Várzea de la ciudad de Praia en la isla de Santiago de Cabo Verde. Es un estadio certificado por la FIFA para la celebración de partidos internacionales.[1]

En este campo se disputan los partidos de fútbol de los diferentes campeonatos organizados por la asociación regional de fútbol de Santiago Sur.

Historia

En el año 2004 la gestión del estadio pasa a ser realizada por la Asociación Regional de Fútbol de Santiago Sur, sin embargo los gastos del recinto siguen siendo a cargo del ayuntamiento de Praia.[2]

El 15 de marzo de 2007 fue inaugurado el césped artificial del campo, sustituyendo la hierba que existía antes en muy malas condiciones debido a que el clima que no es favorable para el césped natural. Se homologa para poder acoger los partidos internaciones, siendo el primero del país en estar habilitado por la FIFA. El precio de la obra costó 545.000 euros.

A finales de 2010 se instala luz artificial al estadio.[3] En 2011 se dota de asientos, y el estadio se queda con el actual aforo de 8.000 personas.[4] Hasta el año 2013 la selección de fútbol de Cabo Verde ha venido disputando los partidos como local en esta estadio, hasta que se mudó al estadio Nacional de Cabo Verde.

Estádio da Várzea is a multi-purpose stadium in Praia, Cape Verde just west of the city center's plateau in the subdivision of Várzea and on Avenida Cidade de Lisboa on its east side. It is currently used mostly for football matches. The stadium holds 8,000 people.[1] The stadium is owned by the city of Praia and is operated by the Santiago South Regional Football Association and serves its headquarters of the association. The other stadium operated by the association in the south of the island is Calabaceira. The entrance is on the west side of the stadium where most of the seat is. The stadium has seat rows in the left and right sides, 200 meters east is the Plateau of Praia. Its size is 108 by 69 m, the longest part of the field goes north to south with a 15 degree angle facing east at the top. Its elevation is about 4 meters above sea level. A smaller practice field lies due south. The stadium is home to the four best football clubs in Cape Verde, Sporting, CD Travadores, Académica and Boavista FC the Santiago Island first division alongside Vitória FC, one of the region's best, it also home of Desportivo da Praia which is a military club and the lesser club Benfica Praia. Other teams that base in another part include ADESBA located in the nearby neighborhood of Craveiro Lopes some hundreds of meters north but play in the stadium.
