Johnston was born in Mississauga, Ontario, before moving to Georgetown in Halton Hills when he was one year old.[1] There, he began playing soccer at age six for Georgetown SC.[1] At age thirteen, he and his family moved to Milton.[1]
In 2017, Johnston played for League1 Ontario side Woodbridge Strikers, scoring one goal in five appearances.[2] In 2018, he made seven league appearances for Woodbridge and three in the playoffs.[3] In 2019, Johnston made twelve appearances, scoring one goal.[4]
In fall 2019, Johnston began attending Cape Breton University, where he made eight appearances and scored one goal for the varsity team.[5]
On 6 July 2020, Johnston signed a multi-year contract with Canadian Premier League side York9 (later renamed York United).[6] Despite being drafted by York9 in the 2019 CPL–U Sports Draft, he elected to sign a full-time contract with the club instead of returning to university.[7] He made his debut on August 19 against Pacific FC. Johnston scored his first goal for York on July 24, 2021 against FC Edmonton.[8] 2021 was a breakout season for Johnston, as he became a regular starter, and was ranked the 27th best player in the Canadian Premier League at the end of the season.[9] In November 2021, York announced they had signed Johnston to a contract extension, lasting until 2024.[10]
