Efthimis Kioumourtzoglou (Greek: Ευθύμης Κιουμουρτζόγλου; born September 28, 1952 in Thessaloniki, Greece) is a Greek former professional basketball coach.

Clubs coaching career

Efthimis Kioumourtzoglou has been the head coach of five teams in Greece’s A league. In 1995, Kioumourtzoglou was a EuroLeague semifinalist at the Zaragoza EuroLeague Final Four, where he led his team, Panathinaikos, to a 3rd-place finish. In 1996, he was a FIBA European Cup (FIBA Saporta Cup) finalist, while coaching PAOK. He was also the head coach of Panionios, Aris, and Iraklis.

National team coaching career

He was Kostas Politis's first assistant in winning the Eurobasket 1987. He took over as head coach of the Greek national team in October 1988 and guided it in 123 matches. With the men's national basketball team, he won the silver medal at the 1989 Eurobasket held in Zagreb, Croatia. He was also the head coach of the Greek National Team which won for the first time in its history the 6th place in the World Championship in 1990, which took place in Argentina. He contributed significantly to establishing Greece among the great powers of European basketball by finishing 5th in the 1991 Eurobasket and 4th in the 1993 Eurobasket.

He resigned his position as the head coach of the National Team on July 30, 1994 shortly before the start of the Toronto 1994 World Basketball Championship, due to his efforts to maintain discipline following an incident with international center Panagiotis Fasoulas. The team that he had prepared for this particular event excelled, taking 4th place, guided by his first assistant Makis Dendrinos.

Academic career

Efthiymis Kioumurtzoglou is Professor Emeritus at the Democritus University of Thrace. He has served also as a professor at the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki and the University of Nicosia, Cyprus. He served from 1988 to 2004 as a director at Olympic Games Organizing Committee (Athens 2004). He has published 135 scientific articles and 9 books on basketball and motor learning.
