On 13 June 2019, AEK Athens officially announced the acquisition of the Greek goalkeeper, who signed a contract, running until the summer of 2023.[3]
On 18 June 2021, he was loaned to Sheriff Tiraspol until the summer of 2022.[4] The Greek keeper had a vital contribution in the qualifying phase and play-off round, as in a total of eight matches, he kept clean sheets in six of them. In the qualifying phase, Athanasiadis made 21 saves and produced another man-of-the-match performance on 21 August against Dinamo Zagreb, when he kept a clean sheet, making six crucial saves. On 28 September 2021, in the second UEFA Champions League group-stage match he performed impressively against Real Madrid as the 28-year-old goalkeeper made 10 saves, six within the area, produced one of the great Champions League shocks as the competition's least experienced club upstaged the 13-time European champions at the Bernabeu. He had a total of 48 touches in the match, stopping every effort of Carlo Ancelotti's players, except for Karim Benzema's penalty, in a 2–1 away win in the UEFA Champions League group stage. He was voted Man of the Match for his performance.[5] [6]
On 24 December 2021, Giorgos Athanasiadis, was named the best goalkeeper of the year in Moldova and is undoubtedly the reward for his excellent performances with his club. In the league participated in 11 matches for Benfica, recording an impressive 9 clean sheets, while he has played in 13 matches in the UEFA Champions League.[7] Athanasiadis was the goalkeeper with the most saves in the 2021–22 UEFA Champions League group stage. His 29 appearances against Real Madrid CF, Inter Milan and FC Shakhtar Donetsk, one more than the performance of Simon Mignolet. In fact, 10 of Athanasiadis's interventions took place in the same game, at the Santiago Bernabeu against Real, where the Moldovan champions prevailed with a remarkable 2–1. That performance is a record of interventions in an away match for a team that won.[8]
Athanasiadis was called up by the senior Greece side for the 2022–23 UEFA Nations League matches against Northern Ireland on 2 June 2022, against Kosovo on 5 June 2022 and 12 June 2022 and against Cyprus on 9 June 2022.[9]
