Club career
Barcelona
Born in Matadepera, Barcelona, Catalonia, Puig joined FC Barcelona's youth academy La Masia in 2013, from UFB Jàbac Terrassa.[4] After progressing through the youth setup, he made his senior debut with the reserves on 24 February 2018, coming on as a second-half substitute for Marcus McGuane in a 1–1 home draw against Gimnàstic Tarragona in the Segunda División championship.[5]
On 11 June 2018, Puig renewed his contract with Barça until 2021, and was promoted to the B-team in the Segunda División B.[6] He made his first-team debut on 5 December, replacing fellow youth graduate Oriol Busquets in the 55th minute of a 4–1 home routing of Cultural Leonesa, in the season's Copa del Rey; he also assisted Denis Suárez, who scored Barcelona's fourth goal.[7]
Puig made his La Liga debut on 13 April 2019, starting and playing 67 minutes in a 0–0 draw against Huesca.[8] He scored his first goal for Barça B on 14 September, the second in a 2–2 home draw against AE Prat.[9]
On 6 October 2020, Puig was promoted to the first team, being handed the number 12 jersey which was previously worn by Rafinha.[10] The following 13 January, he scored the winning penalty in the 3–2 penalty shootout win after a 1–1 draw with Real Sociedad in the Supercopa de España semi-final.[11] Eleven days later, he scored his first goal for the first team in a 2–0 away win in La Liga against Elche, when he headed the second goal from a Frenkie de Jong assist.[12]
Throughout the 2020–21 season, Puig struggled to get minutes under manager Ronald Koeman. In the following season under new manager Xavi, he received even less playing time than under the predecessor.[13]
LA Galaxy
On 4 August 2022, LA Galaxy signed Puig using Targeted Allocation Money (TAM) with Barcelona reserving the right of repurchase and 50% of any future sale. He signed a three and a half year contract until the end of the 2025 season.[14][15] He made his Major League Soccer debut 15 days later in a 3–3 draw at home to Seattle Sounders FC, coming on in the 62nd minute for another former Barcelona youth product, Víctor Vázquez.[16]
Puig scored his first goal for the club on 31 August in a 2–2 draw away to Toronto, equalising from distance.[17] On 18 September, he recorded three assists for the Galaxy in their 4–1 victory over Colorado Rapids, becoming the first MLS player since 2014 to record three assists in a single match.[18]
Style of play
A product of La Masia, is known to be a player capable of directing the motion of the game through his great attacking prowess. He has drawn comparisons to Andrés Iniesta in the past, however he struggled for playing time during his time with the Catalan club.[19]
Personal life
Riqui Puig's father, Carlos, was also a footballer. A left-back, he spent his entire career representing Terrassa.[4]
