Career

Kartal began playing tennis at aged six and has been playing on the ITF Women's World Tour since 2019.[1] She has won 6 ITF titles - all in 2021 and in 2022 after returning from a period of injury.[2]

2021: First ITF title

Kartal won her first title in November 2021, on the clay courts at ITF W15 Antalya, beating Hungarian player Amarissa Toth 7-5, 7-5 in the final,[3] shortly followed by her second title (and her first on hardcourts) at ITF W15 Monastir beating former world no.40[4] Ayumi Morita 6-1, 6-2.[5]

Kartal won the women's title at the UK Pro League, beating Freya Christie 6-0, 6-1 in the final.[6][7][8]

2022: WTA and Grand Slam debut

She followed up her success in late 2021 with a strong start to the 2022 season, winning her third title at ITF W25 Birmingham after a 5-7, 6-3, 6-2 win over compatriot Talia Neilson Gatenby,[9][10] and a second consecutive title at ITF W25 Glasgow, beating Czech player Barbora Palicova 7-6(5), 7-5. [11]

Kartal was called up to the Great Britain Billie Jean King Cup team for the Qualifying Round match against Czech Republic in Prague in April 2022, although she was not selected to play any rubbers.[12]

In May 2022, she won two consecutive singles titles in the third and fourth weeks of the W25 Nottingham events- beating Danielle Lao 6-1, 6-0, and Joanna Garland 6-3, 6-1 in the finals.[13][14]

During the grass season, Kartal received wildcards into the main draws at the 2022 Surbiton Trophy, 2022 Ilkley Trophy, and 2022 Nottingham Open. In the W100 Surbiton Trophy, she defeated Yuriko Miyazaki in the first round before being defeated in the second round by Madison Brengle.[15] She made her WTA debut with a wildcard into the main draw of the 2022 Nottingham Open, where she lost in the first round to Camila Giorgi.[16] At the W100 Ilkley Trophy, she reached her first semi final at W100 level- losing 6-7(4), 6-7(1) to compatriot Jodie Burrage.[17]

In June 2022, it was announced that Kartal had been awarded a main draw wildcard at the 2022 Wimbledon Championships, where she made her Grand Slam debut; losing in the first round to lucky loser Lesley Pattinama Kerkhove, 4-6, 6-3,1-6.[18][19] [20]
