Trager attended high school at San Clemente High School, whilst also playing club soccer with Strikers FC Academy.[1] In 2018, Trager attended the United States Air Force Academy and was part of the college soccer team.[2][3] In four seasons with the Falcons, Trager went on to make 58 appearances, scoring 29 goals and tallying eleven assists. He earned honors including First-team All-WAC in 2019, All-WAC Honorable Mention in 2020–21, and was named Offensive Player of the Year for the Western Athletic Conference and First Team All-WAC for the 2021–22 season.[1]
On January 11, 2022, Trager was selected 47th overall in the 2022 MLS SuperDraft by Atlanta United.[4][5][6] Trager didn't immediately sign with Atlanta, opting instead to see out his senior year with the Air Force. He signed with the club's USL Championship affiliate side Atlanta United 2 on June 1, 2022.[7] On July 5, 2022 Atlanta United 2 forward Tristan Trager was named the USL Championship Player of the Week for Week 17 by the league office. Trager recorded his first professional brace in a 4-3 win against Charleston Battery and replicated his tally with a pair of goals against El Paso Locomotive in a 2-2 draw. Coming off a stellar performance away from home for Atlanta United 2s Tristan Trager was named to the USL Championship Team of the Week in Week 31. ATL UTD 2 fought back hard from a goal down and rallied to defeat LA Galaxy II 3-1, scoring all three goals after the 75th minute. Trager put away the first two, recording his second brace and third multi-goal game of the season.
The MLS SuperDraft pick also created two chances and upped his goalscoring tally to eight goals on the year after joining the team in June. This is the second Team of the Week honor for the 23-year-old, who was named USL Player of the Week for Week 17 back in July.
