Carrière

Vainqueur en amateur des Golden Gloves dans la catégorie poids lourds en 1965[1], il passe professionnel la même année et bat aux points Floyd Patterson le 28 octobre 1967[2] puis Thad Spencer le 3 février 1968[3]. Quarry perd en revanche le championnat du monde poids lourds WBA organisé le 27 avril 1968 face à Jimmy Ellis par décision majoritaire à l'issue des 15 rounds[4]. Il s'incline également contre Joe Frazier[5] et George Chuvalo en 1969, Mohamed Ali en 1970 et 1972 et Ken Norton en 1975.

Distinction

• Frazier - Quarry I est élu combat de l'année en 1969 par Ring Magazine.

Jerry „The Bellflower Bomber“ Quarry (* 15. Mai 1945 in Bakersfield, Kalifornien; † 3. Januar 1999 in Templeton, Kalifornien) war ein US-amerikanischer Boxer irischer Herkunft. Vereinzelt auch als „weiße Hoffnung“ bezeichnet, verwehrte er sich gegen diesen Rufnamen, da dieser seiner Meinung nach rassistisch behaftet sei („I'm fighting for the human race“).

Jerry Quarry (May 15, 1945 – January 3, 1999), nicknamed "Irish" or "The Bellflower Bomber", was an American professional boxer.[2] During the peak of his career from 1968 to 1971, Quarry was rated by The Ring magazine as the most popular fighter in the sport. His most famous bouts were against Muhammad Ali.[3] Accumulated damage from lack of attention to defense against larger men at the top level, no head guard sparring, and attempted comebacks in 1977, 1983 and 1992 resulted in Quarry developing an unusually severe case of dementia pugilistica. Unable to perform everyday tasks, dependent on his family, and with the fortune he had earned frittered away, Quarry died at 53 years old.
