Biografia

Professionista dal 1965, nel periodo dal 1967 al 1975 sfidò alcuni dei più noti campioni della propria categoria, come Floyd Patterson, Jimmy Ellis, Buster Mathis, Joe Frazier per il titolo mondiale dei massimi, George Chuvalo, Muhammad Ali, Ron Lyle, Ken Norton.

Nell'ultima parte della sua vita fu affetto da Sindrome da demenza pugilistica, che afflisse anche suo fratello Mike.

In suo onore è stata istituita una fondazione, la Jerry Quarry Foundation, che si occupa dei problemi connessi alla sindrome che ha portato alla morte prematura di entrambi i fratelli Quarry.

Dal 1967 al 1986 lavorò in alcune occasioni come attore per il piccolo schermo. Tra gli altri, interpretò proprio il ruolo di un pugile, "Kid" Hogan, nell'episodio Il pugno della domenica della serie poliziesca Ellery Queen (1976).

Vereinzelt auch als „weiße Hoffnung“ bezeichnet, verwehrte er sich gegen diesen Rufnamen, da dieser seiner Meinung nach rassistisch behaftet sei („I'm fighting for the human race“).

Jerry Quarry (May 15, 1945 – January 3, 1999), nicknamed "Irish" or "The Bellflower Bomber", was an American professional boxer.[2] During the peak of his career from 1968 to 1971, Quarry was rated by The Ring magazine as the most popular fighter in the sport. His most famous bouts were against Muhammad Ali.[3] Accumulated damage from lack of attention to defense against larger men at the top level, no head guard sparring, and attempted comebacks in 1977, 1983 and 1992 resulted in Quarry developing an unusually severe case of dementia pugilistica. Unable to perform everyday tasks, dependent on his family, and with the fortune he had earned frittered away, Quarry died at 53 years old.
