Il établit le premier record du monde du pentathlon à Göteborg en 1911 avec un total de 5 516 points. L'année suivante, chez lui à Stockholm, il termine deuxième des Jeux dans l'épreuve du décathlon, derrière Jim Thorpe, avec un retard de 688 points. L'année suivante, Jim Thorpe est disqualifié pour avoir participé à des matches de baseball professionnel. Wieslander est alors déclaré vainqueur mais refuse la médaille d'or qui lui est proposée. En 1982, Jim Thorpe est à nouveau déclaré vainqueur, de façon posthume, avec Wieslander comme covainqueur.

Le 15 juillet 2022, le Comité international olympique décide d'attribuer à Jim Thorpe seul les médailles d'or du pentathlon et du décathlon des Jeux olympiques de 1912[1].

Karl Hugo Wieslander (11 June 1889 – 24 May 1976) was a Swedish athlete.[3] He set the inaugural world record in the pentathlon in Gothenburg in 1911 with a score of 5516 points. The following year he finished second in the decathlon at the 1912 Summer Olympics in Stockholm, 688 points behind Jim Thorpe.[1] In 1913, after it was discovered that Thorpe played professional baseball for a minor league team, Thorpe was disqualified for not being an amateur. Wieslander was declared the winner of the 1912 Olympics event and awarded the gold medal, which he refused to accept.[4] In 1982 Thorpe was reinstated by the IOC with Hugo Wieslander as joint winners of the 1912 Olympic decathlon.[5] The IOC announced 15 July 2022 that Thorpe's gold medal had been reinstated and Wieslander, whose family had considered Thorpe the rightful winner, became the silver medalist.[6]
