Arnold Jacob Auerbach, detto Red (New York, 20 settembre 1917 – Washington, 28 ottobre 2006[1]) è stato un allenatore di pallacanestro e dirigente sportivo statunitense nella National Basketball Association. Fu membro del Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame dal 1969 come allenatore.

Carriera

Come allenatore dei Boston Celtics ottenne 9 titoli NBA, il primo nel 1957, poi otto consecutivi, dal 1959 al 1966, la più lunga striscia vincente di campionati nella storia degli sport professionistici nordamericani. Conquistato il nono titolo decise di lasciare il suo posto in panchina a Bill Russell, mantenendo il ruolo di General Manager fino al 1984, e poi di Presidente fino alla morte. Dal 1967 al 2006 i Celtics vinceranno altri 7 titoli, portando il totale degli anelli vinti da Red Auerbach a 16.

Fu per oltre quarant'anni l'allenatore più vincente nella storia della NBA. Nel 2009 venne superato da Phil Jackson, vincitore con i Los Angeles Lakers del decimo titolo personale da head coach, ma considerando i 7 titoli vinti come general manager, Auerbach è stato certamente il personaggio più vincente e carismatico della storia dell'NBA.

Nel 1980 fu nominato il più grande allenatore nella storia della NBA dalla Professional Basketball Writers Association of America.

Arnold Jacob „Red“ Auerbach (* 20. September 1917 in New York City, New York; † 28. Oktober 2006 in Washington, D.C.) war ein US-amerikanischer Basketballtrainer. Er trainierte zwischen 1950 und 1966 die Mannschaft der Boston Celtics und gewann neun Meisterschaften. Erst im Jahr 2009 gelang es Phil Jackson, diese Marke zu überbieten. Nach seiner Aufnahme in die Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame als Coach 1969 ehrte man Auerbach 1980 als besten Trainer der NBA-Geschichte. Er wurde 1996 anlässlich des 50-jährigen Bestehens der NBA von ausgewählten Journalisten unter die 10 Greatest Coaches in NBA History gewählt.[1] Sein Markenzeichen war es, kurz vor Ende eines erfolgreichen Spiels eine Zigarre zu rauchen.

He served as a head coach in the National Basketball Association (NBA), most notably with the Boston Celtics. He was also the head coach of the Washington Capitols and Tri-Cities Blackhawks. As a coach, Auerbach set NBA records with 938 wins and nine championships.[lower-alpha 1][1] After his coaching retirement in 1966, he served as president and front office executive of the Celtics until his death. As general manager and team president of the Celtics, he won an additional seven NBA titles for a grand total of 16 in a span of 29 years and making him one of the most successful team officials in the history of North American professional sports.[2]
