Nella stagione 1998-1999 il Manchester United riuscì a conquistare il tanto ambito treble che consiste nella vittoria del proprio campionato, della propria coppa nazionale e della Coppa dei Campioni/Champions League (battendo in finale il Bayern Monaco), diventando la quarta squadra a essere riuscita nell'impresa, dopo il Celtic nel 1967, l'Ajax nel 1972 e il PSV nel 1988.
